Homework: Finish page 66 by the beginning of the period Friday.  You'll have a little quiz (5 points).

As I said yesterday, as you read the novel you should more or less play the part of a psychologist.  This novel is more about exploring the mind of a character than it is about plot.  Today we will begin charting things that:

1. The Game of Life: After Mr. Spencer explains that life is a game he feels depressed because he believes it is only a game for the "hot shots". Since he isn't one, he knows he won't have much choice to make in his life. (pg. 8)
2.. How Hass is a phony who judges and doesn't respect all people because it makes him go crazy
3.The way Spencer talked to him that made him seem dead.
4. Concern for the future, facing reality. He doesn't feel ready to face the future and is uncomfortable with the idea. He would rather excape. pg 14

Extra credit option: Enter a poem in the Willamette bookstore poetry contest.  Writing poetry is an act of letting the soul sing, and we don't get enough opportunities for that in life, do we?

Extra credit:
+2 for entering a quality poem (most, but not all, poems fall into this category if you spend some time)
+1 for a second poem (but you don't get extra points for those)
+5 for best poem in the class
+10 for 2nd or 3rd in the contest (we will probably have one of those.  Will it be you?)
+15 for 1st place

Requirements:
Awards will be given for the following categories:
Best Rhymed Poem, Best Unrhymed Poem, Best Haiku (that pretty much covers it all!)
You may enter up to 3 poems per category (9 total)
30 lines maximum
Original poems only--no reinterpretations and no illustrations
Enter separate poems on separate sheets of paper
Type poems

In upper left corner in a 3x3 box write:
Name
School
Grade
Phone
Poem category

Bring poems to Mr. Isom no later than 2:30 on Friday, April 12
Or email poem to poetrycontest@willamette.edu by 5:00; or hand deliver to Willamette bookstore


Lyrics to popular music are basically poems, too.  If you need some inspiration, concentrate on the lyrics to some of your favorite songs.

For your reference, here is a link to the document explaining how to do the oral presentation.  You should know that typically only 1/4 of the class receives A's.  These must be very good presentations.  Ask yourself this question: "Is my presentation so good that students from Dr. Berry and Mr. Thayer's classes would beg to come in here to see it?"
