Walden Posters due
25 minutes. Study each poster. Read the entire written portion for each poster. No, that doesn't mean "skim." Examine the details of the picture. Then score it out of 50 points. 25 for the picture and 25 for the writing. I'll let you decide how to grade it. Make sure that your score is carefully considered, though. Judge like they do in the Olympics. That is, the best one in the class will receive 24/25--no one will receive a perfect score. In reality, I will probably give a number of the posters full points, but for our purposes today, no one gets a perfect score. After scoring all of them, come up to the dry erase board and vote for your three favorite posters.
Extra credit:
7 points for 1st place
5 points for 2nd
3 points for 3rd
3-7 points to Mr. Isom's choice of a great poster that didn't take 1st, 2nd, or 3rd.

Society is a joint-stock company, in which the members agree, for the better securing of his bread to each shareholder, to surrender the liberty and culture of the eater. The virtue in most request is conformity. Self-reliance is its aversion. It loves not realities and creators, but names and customs"--Emerson

Where do you take issue with Thoreau? You don't have to agree with him, you know!

Transcentalist Principles and Characteristics
Transcendentalism: Origins, Characteristics, and Impact

Walden Poster Assignment due Thursday after Thanksgiving

THANKSGIVING BASKET
We will be putting together a basket this season for a struggling family.
Please consider what it would be like to not have enough money to put together a decent meal, let alone a Thanksgiving feast (I usually spend about $200 on Thanksgiving, for example--not cheap).

Homework:
Read pages 31-53 in the Dover Thrift edition, if  you check it out. (Up to the point where Thoreau lists the expenses for building his house.) That's the end of "Economy"
I would recommend reading the online annotated text, however.
Walden online text
Homework Monday: Read pages 54-64
Remember, your assignment is to collect 25 significant quotes from your reading along with page numbers. If you're using the online text, simply copy quotes and paste them into a document that you can print. Rather than using page numbers, you will cite your quotes by section and paragraph number. (e.g. Economy, 1C, 16). Usually by the end of page 53 most students have collected approximately 15 quotes.

It will be easier for most of you. Additionally, you can highlight quotes and passages and copy them into your list of quotes, which you can print out for me later, if you would rather do that than handwrite them.
As you read, write down significant quotes (or copy and paste). You have already written approximately five (5) quotes from class. Don't worry too much if you get bogged down and don't understand certain passages. Just continue on and you will find something that jumps out to you after a few paragraphs.

Example sentences for words "pallid" to end
Two stories to read for fun (and practice)
I walked into the woods alone. My friends told me not to, but I was dauntless. As I wandered deeper into the woods, and I found an old, extant house. I ventured deeper into the basement and discovered a cabalistic ritual. The figures were morbid and pallid, surrounded by a panoply of ancient tomes along the walls. I felt the exigency to vacate the dankness of this wretched pit that surrounded my being. But before I could flee the premises, the dark robed figures stood as one. That is when I felt their ethereal blades pierce my flesh and rend my soul from my body. I saw nothing but dark cloth.

The man was no longer looking through his own eyes, but rather surveying the scene from above. It was a horribly morbid sight, and if the man had been in his own body he would have felt ill, but he was not. In fact, it was his body that he was looking upon. The pallid corpse lay embowed on a stone table, ribs nearly stabbing through the flesh of the emaciated figure. A cart still good to the left of the stone table, a panopoly of knives and other instruments lay upon it, lined up next to a large leather tome. The body- looking back upon it- was bloody, the hair matted and the chest stained. The man puzzled over this. Clearly, the cadaver was his own, yet even as he looked upon it he was sure he was still extant- he was conscious, at the very least, if not in his own flesh and blood. It was this certainty that spread the man's dauntlessness and (somehow, though without any physical being he was unsure of the exact actions he took) he turns the pages of the book, staring horrified at the images that filled the yellow pages. Gruesome forms stared at him from the pages, mutilated bodies and mangled forms that seems to float before his eyes. The man felt an exigency to slam the book shut, but he could not, for another man had entered the room. This man strode to the table, stood next to the body, picked up one of the knives – one that was perhaps 4 inches length, and ribbed. He raised it carefully. It glimmered in the dim light of the room. There was a flash of silver, a stabbing pain, and suddenly he was in his body once more – he was not dead after all. Agony flooded through him, spreading to each limb, each joint, every appendage. He thought he was dead when he had looked upon his body, but he knew that he was not dead, but dying. The knife a leech that was slowly ebbing away his life force. Slowly, his vision faded, his body weakened, and soon, the man was no longer alive.

ROMANTICISM in The Scarlet Letter
ROMANTICISM NOTES:

HOMEWORK: Most of you need to do some serious review of The Scarlet Letter. If you did not know who Chillingworth was before today, for example, you have a problem. Also, as you reasd, keep mental notes on who says what. The exam for this novel is tough and many students score C's which is . . . a bummer. So, what you might want to consider doing (I can't believe I'm saying this) is read some sort of online summary and discussion of the book.  Sparknotes for this book is actually quite good, although I think that a couple of parts of the analysis a bit off. The Sparknotes summary will be somewhat challenging for some of you to read, too :^/  There are other summaries, too, and I imagine that some of you know that there are forums where people discuss the novel. With the Internet, you can become self-sufficient learners. I imagine that you could search for "Why is Chillingworth named Chillingworth?" and find some interesting ideas and information (I haven't looked it up). You could do the same thing for Pearl, of course. Or "Symbolism in The Scarlet Letter." You get the idea. If you want an "A" in the class, you're going to read carefully AND think quite a bit about what you read.

Note: From now on, whenever you want to go to the bathroom or locker, you have to ask in a foreign language. "Why, Mr. Isom?"--"Je ne sais pas/No lo sé/Ich weish es nicht/I don't know."
French: Puis-je aller aux toilettes (pooh ee zhuh all "a" oh twah let)
