Note on Bean Trees reading: Some of you are so far behind in your reading that I'm worried you might not finish the novel. Here's a hint, just because I'm feeling nice: most of the test questions are on the following chapters: 1-9; 15-17. Of course that doesn't mean that there aren't any questions from chapters 10-14, but if you're going to cut anything, I'd probably go with those chapters :^/

Immigration. Mattie says that "we have a legal obligation to help" undocumented immigrants who come to this country seeking political asylum. Do we? What about other "illegal aliens"? What should be done concerning the 12 million undocumented immigrants in this country? Do undocumented immigrants pose a problem in this country? Should they be deported? Granted amnesty?

"The secret." Art has the power to reveal the secret, which is . . .

 . . . that there is no secret? That there is an infinite number of secrets? That there is meaning and purpose that can be found if we . . . 

The message of the poem is that:
