Friday

Watch Finding Forrester. My feeling is that this movie should help you understand the key issues that Holden is dealing with in Catcher in the Rye. In particular, today we will see this issue of vulnerability--this time the vulnerability of Salinger/Forrester. Remember, in many ways Holden is Salinger (although Forrester is quite annoyed by English teachers who say things like this).

Read to 134 tonight.

Fitzgeraldesque rewrites of novel passages.
Student examples:

After Tupac and D. Foster (By Jaysa Coons, Gage Olivera, and Caleb Laws)
Original:
"When I listen to Tupac," D said softly, "I be thinking about the way my life could've been, you know. Like he sings about being in his mama's belly when she was in jail and then when his mama started doing drugs and stuff and then when his mama's boyfriend was beating on him and all that crazy nonesense."
Fitzgerald:
"When I ponder over Tupac's words," D whispered softly," I often contemplate about the way my life could've gone about. He hums tragic melodies about being in the whomb, when his mother dearest was in confinement, and there after when his mother began to illegally self-medicate, her significant other of opposite gender began to domestically abuse him."

"Really?" he inquired. "She was my first coach."
"I know," I answered abruptly. "Sometimes she'd tell us how you were doing. We all rooted so hard for you. I bet you'd have medaled at the Olympics."
He beamed like the sun's rays reflecting off the frozen water.
"My mom still thinks that I will, like suddenly everything's going to be okay." After he said this, he fell into a sort of trance, staring into nothing for a brief pause, his mind wandering.
He shook himself and, realizing the awkward silence, proceeded, "How did you fare?" He continued as if he had just woken up.

The west shore of the Salton Sea had once been the site of immaculate speculation and investment. It carried an aura of undeniable opportunity, as if the land itself was beckoning the nubile minds of developers. But its dreams, so close to the mind's eye, never came to fruition. Its desolate boulevards waited for the children's footsteps and playful banter. The lots remained vacant, the only sound coming from the tumbleweeds, as they settled into vast obscurity.
