Wednesday

Vocal Quiz
 Vocabulary for Final Exam
Catcher Her in the Oatmeal
Make a creative rewrite of a fairy tale in the voice of Holden.
Work in groups. One person writes; other people jot down specific page references (5) that show your writing is similar to Salinger's.
(or just tell me what part of the book you are plagiarizing;)
Three Little Pigs, etc.

Extra Credit:

Film or novel that is similar to Catcher in the Rye
+4-7 points, depending on the quality of your work. Due Thur/Fri
This will raise your grade approximately 3% (87% becomes 90%, an "A")
Watch one of the following movies or read one of the following books and type two pages, double-spaced, discussing parallels between the movie/book and The Catcher in the Rye. To do this, you will need to cite at least three examples from Catcher in the Rye (the more the better, of course).
Novels:
Franny and Zooey
Fight Club
Other
Movies:
Finding Forrester
Field of Dreams
Harold and Maude
Moonrise Kingdom
The Royal Tenenbaums
Igby Goes Down
(Note: a couple of these movies are R-rated and I can't really recommend them, if you know what I mean. At your own discretion!)

Wow, I can't believe I'm giving you this much extra time, but considering that it's the biggest assignment of the year and that it is really very difficult to do well, I'm ok with that. MAKE IT GOOD! THE CREATIVE PART ISN'T GRADED AS STRINGENTLY AS THE ESSAY IS.
I would recommend coming in after school for help or having someone proofread. Yes, it's ok, so long as they don't write it!

4. Compare Catcher in the Rye to The Fault in Our Stars
What ideas are similar? How is the narrator similar? How is the writing similar? (think commentary)

Sooooo beautiful!

In addition to T.S. Eliot, another poet who expresses the futility of war is the Frenchman Jacques Prevert. Here's his poem Barbara.

If you speak French and would like to work on your accent, listen to this reading of the poem and pause frequently to repeat. This in one of the BEST ways to improve your pronunciation in any language!!

Some of you might want to do your rewrite over the weekend, even though it's not due until Thur/Fri the 14/15 (Sorry 1st period. I said Monday, but it's really Thursday)

Prufrock.
What is the overwhelming question?
Truman Show quote: How's it going to end?

T.S. Eliot's poem expresses the sentiments of the modern man living in a fractured world, the world of the Lost Generation.
Eliot's poem was pivotal and is largely responsible for the change in perspective of artists, a change that remained for decades and which, to a large extent, is still found in much of the art produced in the world. Whether or not we can say that Salinger was influenced by this poem, but the sense of disillusionment surely impacted Salinger. If the world was able to partly rise from the directionlessness and hopelessness of WWI, WWII broke the camel's back. Salinger himself was in the Normandy invasion and saw hundereds of his comrades killed. Doubtless, this influenced his thinking and is seen in Holden's bleak view of the world.
