If the world was able to partly rise from the directionlessness and hopelessness of WWI, WWII broke the camel's back. Salinger himself was in the Normandy invasion and saw hundereds of his comrades killed. Doubtless, this influenced his thinking and is seen in Holden's bleak view of the world.
