ROMANTICISM in The Scarlet Letter
ROMANTICISM NOTES:
HOMEWORK: Most of you need to do some serious review of The Scarlet Letter. If you did not know who Chillingworth was before today, for example, you have a problem. Also, as you reasd, keep mental notes on who says what. The exam for this novel is tough and many students score C's which is . . . a bummer. So, what you might want to consider doing (I can't believe I'm saying this) is read some sort of online summary and discussion of the book. Sparknotes for this book is actually quite good, although I think that a couple of parts of the analysis a bit off. The Sparknotes summary will be somewhat challenging for some of you to read, too :^/ There are other summaries, too, and I imagine that some of you know that there are forums where people discuss the novel. With the Internet, you can become self-sufficient learners. I imagine that you could search for "Why is Chillingworth named Chillingworth?" and find some interesting ideas and information (I haven't looked it up). You could do the same thing for Pearl, of course. Or "Symbolism in The Scarlet Letter." You get the idea. If you want an "A" in the class, you're going to read carefully AND think quite a bit about what you read.
Note: From now on, whenever you want to go to the bathroom or locker, you have to ask in a foreign language. "Why, Mr. Isom?"--"Je ne sais pas/No lo sé/Ich weish es nicht/I don't know."
French: Puis-je aller aux toilettes (pooh ee zhuh all "a" oh twah let)
Spanish: Puedo ir al bano? (pooh "a" dough ear all bahn yo)
German: Darf ich in das Badezimmer gehen (? you tell me. Darf eesch in dahs bahd zimmer gay en??)
