Today you will finish your rough draft of the essay on "The Lottery." Yes, it is a pre-assessment, but I am, indeed, grading it.  I will go pretty easy on you. You'll score a 9/10 for a strong essay that includes:
  • A powerful opening sentence that pulls in the reader
  • A focused thesis
  • At least three quotes from the story supporting your thesis
  • A sentence or two of elaboration of each quote
10/10 will go to students with very strong papers. To write a very strong paper you will need to:
  • Elaborate for at least four sentences in one or more of your paragraphs
  • Write a strong conclusion that leaves the reader either convinced or thinking
  • Write an essay that is interesting. "Ah, I'm glad I read that." You want me to say that :^)
  • Use transitions
  • Sentence variety. At least one of your sentences should be around 15 words long (rough rule of thumb) and others should vary in length. Remember, combine sentences at times.
HOMEWORK: REVISE AND TYPE A SECOND DRAFT TO HAND IN THURSDAY/FRIDAY
Staple your rough draft to the back of your typed essay. Because this is quite a bit of work, you will receive two grades: 10 participation points and 10 points for the graded essay. The participation points are automatic 10/10 for everyone who submits a typed, double-spaced essay of at least 1.5 pages. The writing points will be graded generously with most students receiving 9's, I'm guessing.

Homework:
Learn the  literary terms by next Thursday/Friday (yes, 40, but you already know most)
This Thur/Fri you will have a 5 point quiz over the first 20--that's "allusion" through  "tone"
